DU working to confirm status of study-abroad students in Paris

On Friday night, officials in Paris said gunmen with AK-47s opened fire at multiple locations throughout the city. But the students the university has talked to are staying in their apartments and off the street.

The University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Arlington both confirmed they have no students in Paris at the moment on university-sponsored study overseas trips. By 6:15 p.m. MST, the university made contact with the remaining students unaccounted for.

“We’re doing all we can to make sure they are safe and secure, and as the situation develops, working to make accommodations to bring them home as necessary”, Cody said. Governor Andrew Cuomo says NY is standing with France as they have stood by us in times of need.

Southern Methodist University reports 11 of its students are now studying in Paris, and school officials have heard from all of them that they are safe.

“We are shocked and saddened by the events unfolding in Paris”, Facebook said in a written statement. “Communication is critical in these moments, both for people there and for their friends and families anxious for news”.

Vince Moore, spokesperson for the university, said Dawson and Ciuba were studying overseas in Brussels but were headed to Paris for the weekend, The pair was just outside the city when the attacks took place, Moore said.
