Coming out on top, as the world’s most liveable city, is Melbourne in Australia – with an overall rating of 97.5.

Tourism Minister Leon Bignell says Adelaide’s quality health and education facilities make it highly competitive.

Australian city Melbourne has once again held on to its crown as the most liveable city in the world, according to a global survey.

Every city is assigned a rating of relative comfort for over 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five broad categories: stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure. It lost out to Adelaide and Melbourne due to its lower score for culture and environment, and stability.

Another Australian city, Adelaide, also made the list tying for the fifth spot with the Canadian city of Calgary.

Melbourne placed first ahead of Vienna, Vancouver and Toronto.

Sydney and Perth were ranked seventh and eighth, respectively.

“Melbourne offers an enviable lifestyle – some of the best sports and major events, the best artists and creative minds, the best universities and schools, the best entrepreneurs and ideas, world-class and well-connected infrastructure and a strong economy – what’s not to love”, said Andrews.

By contrast, some regions have bucked the trend – seven Chinese cities improved their ranking over the last 12 months “largely because of a lower threat from civil unrest”, the report said.

Committee for Melbourne chief Kate Roffey said there were always questions about rankings, “and in particular how and what they measure, but there is no doubt The Economist Intelligence Unit ranking … is a significant achievement”.

“Conflict will not just cause disruption in its own right, it will also damage infrastructure, overburden hospitals and undermine the availability of goods, services and recreational activities”, the report stated.
