The charity gathers donations for former members of the armed services. Flanked by her husband Prince William and joining her mother-in-law Queen Elizabeth, Middleton was right on point with her wardrobe choice for the evening, which commemorated those who lost their lives in conflicts.

The day before, the rain didn’t put off a bearded Prince Harry and his grandfather Prince Philip from donning full military regalia and saluting the graves of unknown soldiers from the two world wars, when they attended the opening of Westminster Abbey’s Field of Remembrance. It was specifically poignant as this year is the 70th anniversary since the end of World War II and the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Among those marching was Captain Bill Canning, 85, who captained HMS Broadsword in 1982 at Falklands.

The annual Festival of Remembrance is one of London’s most important annual events, and pays tribute to those from both contemporary and ancient times who have made great sacrifices for the country.

The Book of Remembrance was delivered to the stage by Corporal Anna Cross, a reservist with the Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps who recently travelled to Sierra Leone to help with the devastating Ebola crisis.

That country’s outbreak was declared over by the World Health Organisation on Saturday, and Cross’s story highlighted the varied nature of service to the country.
