Duck-duck-goose and quiet in Cleveland as Donald Trump takes nomination

“Friends, delegates, and fellow Americans, I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency, Donald Trump said Thursday night in the longest acceptance speech since Bill Clinton’s in 1972”.

She said her father’s greatest “talent is his ability to see potential in people before they see it in themselves”, and said he inspired those around him to “strive for excellence”.

Republican nominee Donald Trump offered Americans nothing more than “prejudice and paranoia”, according to the chair of Democrat Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Added Trump: “He’s got intellect, but he didn’t use it”. “This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness”, Mr Trump said.

“As long as we are led by politicians who will not put America first, then we can be assured that other nations will not treat America with respect”. The GOP candidate told delegates that he will crack down on violence against police. “Beginning on January 20, 2017, safety will be restored”, Mr Trump will say. “This will all change when I take office”.

“Our convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation”, Trump said, to wild applause and cheers.

The Trump offspring, who have also emerged as political advisers on everything from staffing to their father’s vice presidential pick, have proven to be sharp attack dogs as well.

Citing a wave of violence in American cities, Trump vowed to restore law and order, warning that 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records “are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens”.

He would roll back federal regulations that he said cost the country US$2 trillion a year, providing new wealth that will allow an upsurge in spending to fix roads, bridges, airports and tunnels. But his economic proposals were vague, with unspecified plans to create millions of jobs.

Last night’s address was a familiar role for Ivanka – she introduced her father last summer when he declared his candidacy inside of Trump Tower’s lobby and has often been tapped to warm-up the crowd at rallies before her father takes the stage.

In 2012, then-Republican nominee Mitt Romney rose by about five percentage points in the Reuters/Ipsos poll after his party’s convention.

Mr Trump will present himself as someone who can solve problems that have proved hard over the decades.

“No one knows the system better than me”, he said.

As the last speaker in a four-day marathon of events in Cleveland, Trump has his biggest chance yet to try to end the bickering among various factions of the Republican Party and foster a spirit of unity.

Trump wants to build a wall along the USA border with Mexico, ban Muslims from war-torn Middle Eastern countries and renegotiate worldwide trade agreements.

“Let’s face it, we’re officially for Cruz but there were a lot of [Marco] Rubio and other Rubio people that were in that group”, Bishop said, noting he was initially a Rubio supporter.
