Duffy delivers 16 strikeouts in eight innings

Tampa Bay Rays’ Brad Miller high-fives teammates in the dugout after his home run off New York Yankees starting pitcher Michael Pineda during the fifth inning of a baseball game Sunday, July 31, 2016, in St. Petersburg, Fla. “It was something nice for me just to kind of start to think about weeks and months to come”, said now Giants pitcher Matt Moore.

Archer gave up three runs on six hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out six to raise his AL-leading total to 161. Rays starter Matt Andriese pitched four innings and allowed a run on three hits and struck out three.

Four Royals relievers combined for four innings of scoreless relief, combining for seven strikeouts as Kansas City won back-to-back games for the first time since June 30.

The 27-year-old had not pitched a complete game in 94 big league starts coming in.

“Tough loss”, said Rays’ manager Kevin Cash.

Duffy struck out a franchise-record 16 through eight innings Monday night. “We’ll move forward and hopefully the guys we got in return will be the players that we expect”.

Almost impressive as his strikeout total, Duffy induced a whopping 35 missed swings, tying Clayton Kershaw for the most by any pitcher in a single game over the last 15 years, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Rookie Max Kepler had three two-run homers and six RBIs, leading visiting Minnesota over Cleveland. The Rays received two minor-leaguers for Moore in addition to 25-year-old infielder Matt Duffy, who now is on the disabled list with a strained Achilles tendon and is expected to begin a rehab assignment soon.

“My fastball was jumping out of my hand, my changeup felt really good and my changeup was there”, he told Scanlon. “I wasn’t sure where it got him”.

“Big, huge hit by Salvy”, said Yost, who had stacked the lineup with a lefty-switch-lefty combo to keep opponents from taking advantage of situational use in the bullpen. “He believes in this group”. Davis and the Royals are hopeful he will be able to come off the disabled list when he becomes eligible August 12.

Rays: RHP Alex Cobb (Tommy John surgery) threw another bullpen session and will get another rehab start Thursday.

That will look to change tonight when Yordano Ventura gets the ball for the Royals. He has lost five straight decisions. Moore is now under contract at San Francisco for three seasons, but the Bay Area could be a good fit for the former Fighting Pinto.
