Dugdale distances Scottish Labour from Corbyn EU comments

Jeremy Corbyn will take to the stage with UB40 today as the reggae band endorses his leadership campaign in a Labour Of Love to keep him at the top of the party.

During her fiery attack, the Prime Minister also quoted a Twitter user when highlighting the response Mr Corbyn got after he asked Twitter followers for questions to ask in the Commons.

“Over the course of the next parliament, we will use public investment and legislation to promote the creation of over 200 local energy companies, giving towns, cities and localities the powers they need to drive a clean, locally accountable energy system with public, not-for-profit companies”.

Reggae band UB40 hailed Jeremy Corbyn as the man who can “transform” Britain as they endorsed his leadership campaign.

Corbyn has pledged to reverse cuts in arts spending made by governments over the past few years.

If the objective of the first few Prime Minister’s Questions sessions that a new leader faces is to assert their authority, both over the Opposition and their new party, then Theresa May managed that today. “I hope our party clarifies its position in support of United Kingdom membership of the single market and continued close engagement with the European Union”.

Mr Smith said: “Jeremy is the disunity candidate in this contest”.

Jeremy Corbyn on Wednesday introduced a green energy agenda “for the 60 million, not the big six”, referring to the country’s major gas and electric suppliers, and said a Labour government would “act to protect the future of our planet, with social justice at the heart of our environmental policies”, if elected to power. Neither candidate knew the questions in advance.

Mr Corbyn has tolerated abuse in the party and his team has taken part in attacking staff, Mr Smith claimed as he promised to “bring an end to abuse and intimidation once and for all”.

A spokesperson for the Owen Smith campaign said: “This isn’t a poll – it is a blind assertion”.

When are the leadership debates?

The Labour leader is favourite to win the leadership contest despite losing the support of the overwhelming majority of his MPs.

A series of Labour members have told the Guardian they have been excluded for vague and seemingly spurious reasons, including tweets they insist they did not send or those expressing even slight support for rival policies.

The Labour leader will set a target of generating 65% of United Kingdom electricity from renewable sources by 2030 in a bid to make the country a world leader in green technology.

Some of Corbyn’s allies are concerned there is an orchestrated attempt to purge supporters of the leader from the party before the vote, although only a small proportion – less than 0.5% of the total membership – have been barred so far.
