Duke and Duchess and Cambridge arrive in Victoria

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have spoken of their excited children during the first day of their tour to Canada, joking they hoped the youngsters were not “tearing up Government House” in their absence.

Kate Middleton carried her daughter down the steps of the Canadian Government Airbus 310, taking care of her safety as Princess Charlotte appeared to have a small graze on her right knee.

The Royals have a busy 8-day tour of British Columbia and Yukon.

“The warm welcome that you gave us at that important moment in our lives meant a lot to us – and we have never forgotten it”.

The royal couple and their children will arrive late this evening, United Kingdom time, in a Royal Canadian Air Force jet which will touch down in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia.

In microfashion, the rest of the clan was feeling a little blue, too: Prince George, 3, was the picture of classic English style in a checked oxford underneath a sky-blue sweater-plus shorts and knee socks that are nearly too cute for words.

George did shake hands with Barack Obama on his visit to England in April, when the prince was allowed to greet the USA president dressed in natty pyjamas and a robe before he went to bed.

“But as any parent who has travelled with children knows, it’s a different experience when you bring your whole family with you”, Trudeau said.

The Duchess of Cambridge looked flawless in a gorgeous red-and-white printed Alexander McQueen dress, which she paired with a matching clutch and pumps, while the Duke made his own dapper mark in a black suit.

Premier Christy Clark will also be present. Their visit is scheduled to end on October 1.

William and Kate first visited Canada, the largest Commonwealth country, in 2011 shortly after they got married. Canadian TV livestreamed the ceremonies as the couple placed a wreath at a military memorial and also did a walkabout among cheering crowds.

The 44-year-old Trudeau, who also received loud cheers, joked that getting the kids back on the plane could be a challenge after they see Canada’s lovely Pacific Coast.

Kate and William will visit Vancouver on Sunday (25 September) to visit Downtown Eastside, which is an area known for poverty and homeless addicts.

“George would love this”, William said, referring to his son as he accepted a teddy bear in a black vest.

The kids will stay at a luxurious Victorian mansion that is the home of the governor general, the queen’s representative in Canada. Tomorrow’s stop in Vancouver includes a stop at Sheway, a program that provides health and social service support to women who are pregnant or parenting and are dealing with drug and alcohol issues.
