The Blue Devils outlasted IN, 44-41, IN overtime to win the Pinstripe Bowl, its fourth straight bowl appearance under eighth-year head coach David Cutcliffe and its first bowl win since 1961.
In the overtime, Duke lost Sirk to an injury on its possession but Ross Martin made it less critical by hitting his field goal.
The third quarter began with Duke getting a field goal on their four-minute opening drive and IN responding with a touchdown on a three-yard pass from Sudfeld to Nick Westbrook at the 7:11 mark that capped an 8-play, 59-yard drive. Three Blue Devils – quarterback Thomas Sirk and running backs Jela Duncan and Shaun Wilson – rushed for more than 100 yards each. The under is 4-0 in Blue Devils last 4 non-conference games and the Blue Devils are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games on grass while Duke are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games after allowing more than 280 yards passing in their previous game. That came at the end of a day in which Duke and in seemed to be swinging for the fences in a wild Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium, which ended with a 44-41 win for Duke. “I’m hoping he can and I know he wants to, but I guess around 3:15, as we run out on the field it’ll be “Where ya” at?'” The Hoosiers’ depth should help if Howard can’t go. If you’re looking for Boxing Day excitement, this football game between basketball schools at a baseball stadium (Yankee Stadium) is must-watch. Just because someone has a nice bowl game doesn’t mean they should be written into the 2016 All-B1G squad. IN quarterback Nate Sudfeld went 28-of-51 for 389 yards and three touchdowns in addition to two interceptions.
The Hoosiers tightened up midway through the third, with IN shifting its defensive philosophy to a soft zone IN order to stop the run.
Later, with 1:25 left, Devine Redding broke off a 17-yard run to make it 14-10 Indiana.
The best 6 loss team in the nation (aka the Indiana Hoosiers) vs. the “only 7-5 because they play in the ACC” Duke Blue Devils.
Oakes then hit another field goal to give IN a 34-27 lead.
“We’ve worked so hard for this”, Duke senior Max McCaffrey said after the game on the Duke radio network. And yesterday, he had his best game of the year, rushing for 227 yards and a score on 35 carries. That was immediately followed by Wilson’s 98-yard kick-return touchdown to tie the game at 34.
Wilson ran for 103 yards, including his 85-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Two players later, Washington State’s Marcellus Pippins recovered Walton’s fumble at 5.
In the IN locker room, Wilson told his players not to dwell over one play, one call or anything particular IN the loss to Duke. However that is how the whole season has been characterized: an explosive offense paired with an appalling defense.
Sirk was 17 of 37 for 163 yards and a touchdown. A year later, they fell victim to the on field heroics of Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M in the Peach Bowl, a game in which the Blue Devils led by 21 points at the half and had chances to put the Aggies down for good. Not only is the Pinstripe Bowl a big program game for Duke, but for this season alone as well. “In every bowl game we’ve jumped out on the teams, but towards the end of the games it’s always slipped away from us”. For all the improvements we have seen over the past few seasons, Duke is still fighting perception in the minds of the national audience, an audience that includes potential recruits.
