A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Duke quarterback Thomas Sirk is expected to miss the season after reinjuring the Achilles tendon he tore in February.

Earlier this year, the Duke Blue Devils got some bad news when starting quarterback Thomas Sirk tore his Achilles during a team workout. At the time of the injury, Sirk’s season was put in doubt. Friday’s setback marked Sirk’s third Achilles injury since 2013.

Sirk guided Duke to a 44-41 overtime win over IN in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl by compiling 318 yards of total offense while rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for a third score and was named the game’s co-MVP along with running back Shaun Wilson.

Duke’s leading passer and rusher last season, Sirk had been making a speedy recovery in an attempt to play much of the season. Sirk’s 3,428 total offensive yards rank as the second highest single-season total in school history, trailing only Anthony Dilweg’s 3,713 yards in 1988.

It looks like the Blue Devils will have to go with redshirt freshman Daniel Jones or junior Parker Boehme for the 2016 season. During ACC media days, HC David Cutcliffe was optimistic that Sirk would be able to start the season-opener against NC Central.
