Duke stuns No. 7 Virginia at buzzer
Leading by more than one possession is a sure-fire way to avoid losing on a heartbreaking buzzer beater. The Hoos haven’t won in the building since 1995. He finished one point shy of his season high and was the only Blue Devil to score during a 5½-minute span that bridged the halves, reeling off 18 consecutive points for his team and putting Duke up 41-40 with a jumper with 16½ minutes left.

Freshman Brandon Ingram scored a game-high 25 points for the Blue Devils (19-6, 8-4 ACC).
Virginia coach Tony Bennett put Brogdon on Ingram, which slowed down Ingram. “He made a huge play”. ACC officials Bryan Kersey, Tim Nestor and Terry Wymer missed two traveling violations, one on an up-and-down.
As Allen left the floor, then returned, the ball not releasing until his right foot was back on the ground, again, a violation, not called, Gill was neutralized by Plumlee’s side. Now, they sit two games back in the loss column with trips to Miami and Virginia remaining, as well as a home date with the Blue Devils.
In the immediate pandemonium of Allen’s winning shot, a member of Duke’s sports information crew patted me on the shoulder and told me “your team’s going to be alright”. It came down to Duke beating Virginia in their first meeting of the season, a rivalry game that will become more rare as time goes by. “That’s the best he could have done without fouling”.
“I thought Zach Tuell did a good job in the cage and was poised in the clear”, High Point head coach Torpey said. They are now riding a seven-game win streak, which includes three wins on the road.
Brandon Ingram had cooled off considerably after an other-worldly 9-of-10 in 11 minutes stretch earlier in the game, but he was still an obvious first option.
Both teams made multiple comebacks, in a game with eight ties and an equal number of lead changes.
Having spent the previous section identifying the areas where Virginia struggled now brings me to the positive aspect of the game, and yes, there were positives. The Cavaliers were only 2-of-11 from behind the arc against the Blue Devils, and majority were makeable shots. The basketball gods were good. Allen scored on the play to give Duke the vi…
Virginia fans think Duke’s Grayson Allen got an extra step en route to his game-winning shot against the Cavaliers on Saturday in Durham. The Blue Devils will face the Tar Heels as well as James Madison and Wake Forest that day before returning to Durham to host the Demon Deacons in a scrimmage Sunday, April 3 at 12 p.m.
Allen got the ball on the inbounds, with Marial Shayok checking him. “It just shows you that our team defense is strong, but Malcolm had the ability to really spread out and guard people”. Allen is so aggressive, can get going into the lane and draw some fouls, but Ingram can rise up so we just had to pick our poison in a way.
“I think guys [on defense] see situations a little bit quicker”, Danowski said.
The four guard strategy also seemed to leave Virginia vulnerable on the glass. Duke students took advantage of the occasion with some sweet party hats. He finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
