Dump Trump push fizzles as GOP rejects ‘free the delegates’ push

Many Republican delegates pushed back against Ms Unruh’s efforts, saying the efforts would be ignoring the millions of people who voted for Mr Trump across the country.

The rejection of the “unbinding” proposal was so overwhelming that committee leaders opted not to record the tally. The Rules Committee chair, Enid Mickelsen, did not even have to call a standing vote that would provide an exact vote count, because the voice vote was clearly a win for the anti-unbinding side.

Members of the Republican convention’s rules committee blocked anti-Donald Trump activists on multiple fronts during a 12-hour meeting Thursday, but those activists claim the fight is not over.

Besides a growing “whip” vote-counting operation, one official said the Trump campaign has assigned sympathetic delegates to ride herd on specific rebels in an effort to communicate and keep tabs on them.

The rules allow one-quarter, or 28 members, of the 112-member rules committee, to sign a “minority report” in support of a clause that would allow delegates to vote their conscience, rather than be bound to the vote of their state’s Republican voters, and have it brought up on the convention floor on Monday. For most, the reason has to do with Donald Trump, the party’s expected presidential nominee. And yet, the GOP’s “Never Trump” contingent has been surprisingly persistent, looking for every possible avenue to derail the controversial television personality.

Delegates and staff leaving the meeting were tight-lipped. Later, the group recessed again to allow negotiations between party leaders and delegates on the differing proposals. We have too many people who want to speak.

Top Republican officials and recalcitrant conservatives held closed-door talks Thursday in what some delegates said was an effort to head-off a clash at next week’s GOP national convention that could embarrass the party. Is he or she a “robot” that should automatically vote for the presidential candidate they were selected to represent?

But the committee voted to establish a study committee to review the presidential nomination process. Currently, only SC is winner-take-most. “We need to get behind our candidate”. While the list of potential vps continues to change, he has been campaigning with Newt Gingrich quite a bit. Aside from the occasional rally appearance, Donald Trump’s family have been largely absent from the campaign trail. They lobbied delegates to oppose Unruh and back Trump.

Tim Tebow will not be speaking at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, despite reports that the former NFL quarterback was slated to appear at the GOP gathering’s closing night.

On the panel, special attention is focused on Sen.

Lee later rose during debate on another amendment to argue that the delegates still had the right to vote according to their consciences at the convention.

Some merely interpret current rules as already leaving delegates free to vote for the candidate of their choice.

In another tactic, the dissidents also plan to challenge the roll calls of state delegations when the nominee is chosen later in the week.
