Dunkin’ Donuts releases festive holiday cups following Starbucks cup controversy

Dunkin’ Donuts has released its own limited edition holiday cups, following the so-serious controversy over Starbucks altering their traditional holiday cups to be less overtly Christmas.

True story: I stopped at Starbucks (I live a block away from one, but who doesn’t?) this past weekend and ordered a vente decaf with sugar-free cinnamon dolce syrup and didn’t even notice I should have been offended by the cup.

We highly doubt this is any kind of direct response to Starbucks’ red cup, because Dunkin’ Donuts probably picked the design months ago, long before this controversial brouhaha.

Did Dunkin’ Donuts just start a war with its seasonal coffee cup design?

Customers have been sharing photos of the cups on Instagram and Twitter, showing off the red and green lettering, the wreaths and the word “Joy” written in festive cursive.

A few people believe Starbucks’ move away from Christmas themes on its cups is part of a movement to phase out Christian-themed decorations from the holiday season.

Starbucks vice president of design Jeffrey Fields says the new cups are meant to embrace “the simplicity and the quietness” of the holiday season.

I hope we can all find our peace, be it through our coffee cups or something else, this holiday season.

Starbucks has been unveiling a number of promotions lately, including how it is turning red for the holidays.
