US Open champion and world No.2 Dustin Johnson fired a Crooked Stick course record to surge into a tie for the lead at the BMW Championship.

Johnson didn’t even know he set the course record until Tony Pancake, the golf director at Crooked Stick, congratulated him on the way to the clubhouse.

When asked about the physics involved, Johnson said, “I don’t go into that stuff – as long as it goes where I’m looking”.

“I drove it good, hit a lot of good iron shots, but I really rolled the putter nicely”.

Castro carded a 7-under-par 65.

“Definitely gives me a lot of confidence going into the afternoon on a shot like that”, Hearn said.

Despite a five-under-31 on the front side, Scott produced three three-putt bogeys in a row to open the back nine to tumble back down the leaderboard.

McIlroy reached three under par for the 10 holes he completed before darkness fell as torrential rain and the threat of lightning caused a three-and-a-half hour suspension earlier in the day in Indiana.

Johnson, who has found success after making a putter switch on the eve of the event, seeks his 12th PGA crown. “No matter what I did, how much I practiced, training aids, whatever”.

The highlight of his round was an eagle at ther par-5 15 where he holed a putt or more than 45 feet.

The son-in-law of ice hockey icon Wayne Gretzky, Johnson won the BMW in 2010 when it was played at Cog Hill near Chicago.

McIlroy, coming off a victory at the TPC Boston, was at 3 under through 10 holes.

“I played decent golf”, he said of his Friday effort.

In a bogey-free round, Castro made three-foot birdie putts at the ninth and 13th and a tap-in birdie at 15 to claim his share of the lead.

SPIJK, Netherlands (AP) – Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger shot his second straight 5-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead in the KLM Open. “I’m not as young as I used to be”, Casey said.

As for how to challenge on the weekend, Casey said, “I’ve got no idea. No problem with what I’ve done so far”.

The first round was to resume at 8 a.m. today, with more bad weather in the forecast. He kept bogeys off his card, rolled in a pair of 30-foot putts and had another 65 in his last-minute bid to get to the Tour Championship at East Lake, just 15 minutes from his house.

Day, meanwhile, is set for the Tour Championship and assured of being in the top five in the FedEx Cup, meaning he would only have to win at East Lake to claim the cup and its lucrative bonus.

Rory McIlroy failed to capitalise on an encouraging start to his second round and littered his card with four bogeys in a wayward 72 which leaves him 10 shots off the pace, while Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and current FedExCup leader Patrick Reed are also part of a large group on four under par.
