Dustin Johnson wins WGC as Day falters
In a dramatic finale to the event at Firestone Country Club, US Open champion Johnson fired three birdies in his last six holes to overhaul world number one Jason Day, whose double-bogey on the par-five 16th saw him fall away after leading for the majority of the final round. Johnson did his part, making a tough par save on the 15th hole when he got in range and pouring in a 15-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that made a bogey at the end meaningless.

“I feel great. I feel like my game is where it has been all year”, said Johnson, who won his 11th PGA Tour title and third WGC title.
“I played good this weekend”, Johnson said.
“I’ve played solid all year. Every time I tee it up, I’m trying to win a golf tournament, and unfortunately just fell a little bit short”.
AKRON, Ohio – Dustin Johnson’s best save of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational came about 20 minutes after he’d finished his final round.
3 – Jason Day and Jordan Spieth finished in a tie for third but Spieth will carry more momentum from the tournament as the players shift their attention to The Open Championship.
“If I hit it long and left into the trees, then it’s a hard up-and-down, and it obviously brings out of bounds into play, too”. “If I just keep winning, then that’ll do it for me. The best shot, the only good shot I hit all day”. I felt like if I birdied two out of the last three, I’d have a chance.
Already the clubhouse leader following a 4-under 66 on Sunday, the recently crowned U.S. Open champion was casually hanging out in the scoring area with his 18-month-old son, Tatum, while the final pairing was fruitlessly finishing up on the course.
Three years ago, Johnson was tied for 113th on the PGA Tour in approach shots from 50 to 125 yards. A birdie on the first playoff hole denied top-ranked Lydia Ko of New Zealand her third consecutive major title in a row. Next week Henderson could seek her second major title in a row at the US Women’s Open.
Outside of glimpses of Stuard shown while CBS aired playing opponent David Lingmerth’s shots, the Jackson native and Napoleon High School graduate was rarely mentioned and never shown swinging a golf club despite starting the day in solo fourth.
“Even though I didn’t have my best stuff today, I still had a chance to win”, Piercy said. After a chip-in eagle from 48 feet on the second hole Sunday, Day looked to be Day again until a bogey on the 15th. I don’t know, I’m definitely a little more relaxed out there on the golf course, especially coming down the stretch.
