Stewart targets including Clinton, TV host O’Reilly, Secretary of State John Kerry, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and New York Senator Chuck Schumer weighed in with a litany of often snarky goodbyes, culminating in Senator John McCain’s snarled “So long, jackass”.

“You said to me and to many other people here years ago, never to thank you because we owe you nothing”. Stewart signified his stay on the show by saying, “This is the most attractive place I’ve ever been”.

Still Stewart’s final show featured a slew of cameos from past and present correspondents and a video tribute from his biggest foes, including Sen. After segments showcasing correspondents from the past 16 years and a Goodfellas-inspired bit about his production team, Stewart told the audience to be steadfast and aware, “Bullshit is everywhere…” So whenever something’s been titled ‘Freedom, ‘ ‘Family, ‘ ‘Fairness, ‘ ‘Health, ‘ ‘America, ‘ take a good, long sniff. “Chances are it’s been made in a facility that may contain traces of bulls – – -“. “Thank you”, he managed to say.

He argued the best defense against this “is vigilance”, adding, “If you smell something, say something“. “It’s a pause in the conversation”. “People will remember this ending to this show forever”.

Even Stewart’s long-forgotten predecessor as The Daily Show host, Craig Kilborn, showed up to say, “I knew you’d run this thing into the ground”. And I apologize for that…. “And I’m sure I’ll see you guys before I leave”. Not only did Cenac show up to the taping, he participated in a quiet nod toward his WTF appearance when he and Stewart asked each other, “You good?” which is a direct reference to Maron’s signature resolution lines.

Next up, some of Jon’s rivals wished him goodbye while simultaneously breathing sighs of relief knowing he won’t be around to make their lives harder anymore.
