Per reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Dwight Freeney will be signing a one year deal with the Atlanta Falcons for the 2016 season. The Falcons drafted Vic Beasley in Round 1 in 2015 and have added help to the defensive front, but clearly they felt more was needed. The bulk of his career came with the Colts, who drafted him in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. It was a long road to get here, with the Falcons meeting with Freeney and not immediately signing him, leading to much angst from the fanbase and yours truly. Freeney excelled in that reduced role, recording eight sacks and three forced fumbles despite his limited playing time.
The Syracuse product looked rejuvenated at age 35 and served as something of a mentor for the younger players. After two seasons in San Diego he then found himself signing with the Arizona Cardinals midseason a year ago, where he played really well.

Freeney was a member of the Cardinals last season. In addition to being the worst team in the league in total sacks, they were a middling 18th in passing yards allowed per game on the way to an 8-8 record.
