Dwight Freeney will sign 1-year deal with Cardinals

OLB Dwight Freeney and the Cardinals reached an agreement on a one-year contract.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the signing had not been officially announced by the club. Outside linebacker Alex Okafor leads the team with two sacks, but left a win over the Detroit Lions in Week 5 with a calf injury that is being further evaluated with an MRI. Freeney’s production in San Diego the past two seasons does not jump off the page, but the proven production over the course of his career means he still has the potential to be a legitimate threat off the edge.

His best years came with the Indianapolis Colts from 2002 through 2012. While Freeney will likely occupy a specialist role, his presence could bolster an Arizona defense that has forced 13 turnovers already this season.

“I do not feel good”, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said Sunday after the game when asked about the prognosis for Demens and Okafor.

“It’s outstanding”, Arians said in his regular Monday meeting with reporters. “There wasn’t an opportunity”. He hasn’t had double digit sacks since his 10 in 2010. Considering the Cardinals (4-1) have only recorded eight sacks this season, the news of the signing should be music to the ears of both parties. He has a team-best two sacks this season.
