The inmate who attacked him, Dwayne Stafford, 25, is facing assault charges.

Cannon said Roof suffered some bruising around his face and on his back, Cannon said.

In addition, one of the guard’s had taken a break moments before and the second guard was delivering toilet paper to another inmate.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, officials said there may have been a malfunction with a cell locking mechanism that allowed Stafford to get out and approach Roof. The sheriff said inmates are escorted to the showers one by one while others wait in closed cells.

Roof and his attorneys will not be pressing charges against the inmate, Dwayne Stafford, Cannon said.

“It seems to me, pretty obvious at this point, that at the very least, we have complacency”, remarked Sheriff Al Cannon of the officers assigned to stay with Roof.

Cannon said they are also interviewing the detention officer for what might have occurred.

Dylann Roof, accused of the racially motivated massacre of nine African American parishioners a year ago at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church, was attacked and beaten Thursday by a black inmate in a SC jail, authorities said.

Stafford is in jail for armed robbery, officials said.

According to the sheriff, this was the first incident with Roof since he was jailed last June. Prosecutors say Roof was trying to make his way to Nashville after the shootings.

“I can’t speculate”, he said.

His attorneys are challenging federal prosecutors’ intentions to seek the death penalty against him, filing a motion on Monday that the death penalty and federal death penalty law are unconstitutional, according to the Associated Press.

Roof is a known and confessed racist and has even talked about his desire to start a race war.
