E3 2016: Mass Effect dev diary shows the making of Andromeda

Andromeda is shaping up to be visually stunning – a technical leap that will seem all the more remarkable given the last entry in the series, Mass Effect 3, launched on last-gen systems nearly four years ago.

EA only showed a behind-the-scenes the look that was light on gameplay, although the company promised that we’d see more this fall. Unfortunately, for anyone else that actually was hoping that they’d have some solid info on EA’s upcoming games, I hope you can settle for esoteric answers, because that was pretty much all we got at this show. It’s going to be a wild ride.

“If you go back to the original Mass Effect, there was that sort of awe of going to a new galaxy and meeting all these aliens for the first time – new races, new cultures, new civilizations”, title’s creative director, Mac Walters, told Kotaku at the recent EA Play event.

The E3 trailer also shouldn’t be considered a full reveal trailer, it’s more of a commercial of the development process.

They show not only gameplay footage, but a lot of behind the scene footage of this Frostbite engine based game, including the mocap and character design, which looks very impressive.

He continued, “From that, you can probably infer the timing of when they [the Andromeda explorers] left, to a certain degree”. “It doesn’t feel like you have those many, many edge cases the Mako in [the first Mass Effect] had where you could do insane stuff with it. So that won’t be there, knock on wood”. As just revealed on an EA live stream, Mass Effect: Andromeda’s main character will be named Ryder and will default as a female.

We already know that BioWare is toting the golden promise of zero loading screens in Andromeda, but it appears it won’t be sacrificing scale to do so.

Launching 21 October, the game takes the Battlefield universe to World War I era, featuring tanks, planes, motorbikes, and even horses.

A gameplay trailer was released and boy does it look sweet! Fans are advised to tune in to the event to know more about the next installment of the “Mass Effect” series.

Interestingly, some eagle-eyed forum posters on ZBrushCentral did spot one artist who worked on Mass Effect: Andromeda posting some high-res character model renders of the same character.
