Eagles capitalize on Steelers turnovers in win

With Carson Wentz in street clothes on the sideline, the Eagles-Steelers second half was rather uneventful. After all, the preseason is all about players getting more familiar with one another and in rhythm.

After the Steelers 17-0 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday night, the team left healthy again, but head coach Mike Tomlin did say backup interior lineman Cody Wallace suffered a potential hyperextended knee.

Nolan Carroll’s 38-yard interception return for a score was the lone touchdown of the first half, helping the Eagles to a 17-0 victory Thursday night.

Zach Berman of the Philadelphia Inquirer expected Carroll to remain with the first-team defense, and Thursday’s interception was an indication of the cornerback’s ability to impact the game. The second was a Chase Daniel 3-yard TD run.

How Does Sam Bradford Look?

So the unit played the entire first half against the Pittsburgh Steelers, longer than Eagles coach Doug Pederson had said it would in the days before the game.

With Lane Johnson awaiting the results of a second PEDs test and a 10-game suspension looming, Allen Barbre will start at right tackle with rookie Isaac Seumalo at left guard. “But at the same time we’re fortunate that it’s not and it’s preseason”. “Obviously, I want to extend their time more than three plays, and get them some extensive work in the first quarter and a half”.

The Steelers’ are now 0-2 and their record in their last 15 preseason games dropped to 2-13, which reflects the importance Tomlin puts on these frays.

Steelers: The Steelers sat linebackers Jarvis Jones, Bud Dupree and Anthony Chickillo and cornerback Artie Burns, the team’s first-round pick. Coates was the intended target but Jones overthrew him slightly and cornerback Aaron Grymes made a diving catch for another touchback, to stymie another Steelers scoring opportunity.

Back-up QB Bruce Gradkowski will also miss the contest with a hamstring injury. His season might be over.

The good news here is that it’s only preseason and Ben Roethlisberger will be taking over as the starter when the regular season begins.

One reason to be concerned: The Steelers need a lift at tight end with Ladarius Green out, and miscues by Jesse James and Xavier Grimble didn’t help that cause. He was signed as a free agent from San Diego to replace the retired Heath Miller.

The Eagles expect the first team offense, including quarterback Sam Bradford, to play the entire first quarter, according to Jimmy Kampski at PhillyVoice.com.

In today’s National Football League, simply escaping a preseason game without any major injuries is a victory. It’s also a shorter week for Pittsburgh.
