Eagles extend running back Sproles through 2017

That’s a clear sign of how much the Eagles value his skills and leadership, considering that they are committing another year to a veteran well past the age of 30, especially since they’re already projected to be over the salary cap for 2017.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Darren Sproles to a one-year contract extension, the team announced on Friday. He was due to become a free agent after this season. The deal is worth $4.5 million, according to the NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

As a running back, Sproles remained lethal as a receiver out of the backfield.

Sproles is here to stay. He has shown over the past two years to be very versatile. The other is Hall of Famer Deion Sanders.

Sproles, 33, rushed for 317 yards and three touchdown on 83 carries last season, and he caught 55 passes for 388 yards and one score.

Sproles, 32, skipped all three weeks of voluntary organized team activity practices in May, but Eagles head coach Doug Pederson denied an NFL Network report that Sproles was the subject of trade talks during the NFL draft. But that wasn’t all: He also returned 38 punts for 446 yards and two TDs.

That pick turned out to be Ronald Powell, a linebacker who played in just 14 career games and is not now in the league.
