Stars had heavy hearts on Monday after learning of the death of Eagles guitarist and founder Glenn Frey. Frey, Henley and Souther wrote the track with Bob Seger. “Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide”, said the statement.

Frey was born in Detroit in 1948 and moved to Los Angeles with his then girlfriend in the late 1960s and began writing songs and performing.

The band, however, called it quits in 1980 in dramatic fashion at a political fundraiser as threats were exchanged between band members during their performance, which was explored in the 2013 documentary, “History of the Eagles”. His Eagles band members posted a touching tribute to him on Facebook and fellow band member Don Henley also shared his thoughts about his friend’s passing. It was the ultimate collaboration between Henley and Frey, with Henley singing lead and sketching the story of the hotel where “you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave” and Frey filling such conversational touches as “livin’ it up at the Hotel California“. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and a work ethic that wouldn’t quit.

The guitarist had been battling “intestinal issues” for months prior to his death, and his health troubles prompted the Eagles to bow out of plans to accept their Kennedy Center Honor in December.

“It will be very odd going forward in a world without him in it”, Henley added.

The Eagles reunited for a comeback tour in 1994 and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Their album, “Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)”, was named one of the best-selling album of the last century. His solo hits include The Heat Is On and Smuggler’s Blues. “He was amusing, bullheaded, mercurial, generous, deeply talented and driven”.

Frey and Henley wrote most of their hits and were known as one of the top songwriting teams.

“We were two young men who made the pilgrimage to Los Angeles with the same dream”, he said, “to make our mark in the music industry”.
