Eagles’ Lurie seeks a more open coach
“It was a surprise, but we were not playing up to our standards, the Eagles’ standards”, tight end Zach Ertz said.

Right up until the moment he was sacked, it seemed there was a chance Chip Kelly could return for another year as head coach of the Eagles.
Kelly, a New Hampshire native, was sacked on Tuesday, and had a 26-22 record in three seasons, taking the Eagles to the playoffs in 2013.
There were certainly other reasons why Kelly was given his walking papers, not the least of which were a few roster moves that didn’t pan out, as Kelly traded away running back LeSean McCoy and brought in DeMarco Murray, who hasn’t produced.
Bill Belichick is one of those people.
I’m grateful to (Eagles owner) Jeffrey Lurie for allowing me to coach his Philadelphia Eagles for the past three seasons.
One of the first players to openly come forward to voice complaints about the former coach was Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson, who was Kelly’s first-ever draft pick in Philly.
“I wanted to get a jump start on our head coaching search, and I knew already what I was going to do”, Lurie said.
An anonymous Eagles player also cited Kelly’s inflexibility and refusal to listen to others as a huge issue, a sentiment which Johnson echoed.
Kelly, following his firing, moved to thank Lurie for the opportunity to coach “his beloved” Eagles and said felt “blessed” to work with a great bunch of people at the franchise. “He does a great job and he’s done a great job with that team”.
The Titans, who have been operating with interim coach Mike Mularkey since firing Ken Whisenhunt in early November, are most frequently tipped because of Kelly’s existing relationship with Marcus Mariota, his former quarterback in college at Oregon.
Still, Belichick expressed disappointment at the fact that coaches he deems to be capable have had their tenures ended before they could insert their programs completely.
“Well I was shocked”, Vermeil said Thursday during a guest spot on the 94 WIP morning show. Kashner did not agree with Kelly’s coaching decisions. But, look, I’m not there. “I have never been a part of something like this happening”. “But I do think Chip did a lot of things really well. I have nothing but good things to say about him”.

“We made a lot of changes this off-season”, Johnson said. Murray is averaging just 3.5 yards per carry and has been relegated to a shared backfield role with Ryan Mathews, who has proven a better fit while averaging 5.2 yards per carry with a team-high six rushing touchdowns. It’s just the ’01 team played great when it had to in critical situations in big games.
