Eagles name Carson Wentz starter Week 1
A week ago the Philadelphia Eagles were not sure who their starting quarterback would be for their 2016 season.

That was about the only thing that wasn’t good. It’s a risk to divert from public opinion, but if DePodesta and the Browns didn’t view Wentz as a starter, there’s no need to pay an exorbitant cost. “If he does, we’ve got to make him pay for it”. Wentz’s work ethic as well as his skills have received high praise, and Head Coach Doug Pederson says the rookie will be ready for his first National Football League start.
This will be the first season since 2009 that the Lions have not kept at least five receivers on the final roster, giving Detroit the biggest shortage at the position in week one throughout the NFL. The last time we saw Griffin was 2014, when despite completing 68.7 percent of his passes, he mustered only four touchdowns to six interceptions while being sacked a whopping 33 times in seven games, nine starts.
Wentz said he practice Monday and feels fully healthy.
“The whole time, all along, it was just getting ready for whenever this time would come”, Wentz said.
“I didn’t even know that”, Jackson said. I knew I was taking the mental reps, being out the last couple of weeks, even going out to the first preseason game. Now it’s here. Now it’s here, and I’m really confident in this team.
Wentz, who is trying to make the significant leap from the FCS level at North Dakota State to the pros, was originally earmarked to sit in his rookie season until circumstance intervened and Minnesota’s desperation after the Teddy Bridgewater injury gave the Eagles an opportunity to regain some draft currency.
Paul DePodesta doesn’t have the same career outlook for Carson Wentz as the Philadelphia Eagles.
Pederson broke the news to the team on Monday morning. It’s something that we believe in. This is why we drafted him.
“Would the ideal situation be later than sooner?” All the pieces are here for him to be successful and for us to win some games.”But how many?”
Wentz’s teammates said they believe this as well. They’re in the meeting rooms (with him). “Physically, it’s about his ribs healing and they are healed now”. But that doesn’t mean he’s down on the rookie quarterback.
Pederson addressed the trade of cornerback Eric Rowe, a second-round pick in 2015, to the Patriots for a fourth-round choice in 2018. McNabb didn’t become a starter until Week 10, while Pederson led the Eagles to a 2-7 start.
“Extra preparation is pretty normal”, Wentz said.
“If I were Chase, I’d be disappointed”, Pederson said. “This is what, as an organization, we believe in”. And Pederson noted that everyone is expected to practice on Wednesday including defensive end Vinny Curry, who could be limited. “If anything it just helps me a little more, just to get that fire going and help the young buck come Sunday”.
“Well, the trade happened”, Pederson said. “But at the end of the day, it’s not all about Carson either. We quickly cleaned up and got out of there”. It could be a good sign Wentz being in great physical condition though. The Eagles paid him to get to the quarterback, and the road there Sunday, will be a tough one. For now, the rookie is likely only on the season-long radar in two-QB formats.
