It appears that QB Carson Wentz injured his ribs during Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz (11) throws a pass during the second half of a preseason NFL football game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016, in Philadelphia.

In his National Football League debut, Wentz completed 12 of 24 passes for 89 yards with an interception.

“Carson felt some discomfort and soreness as we began this morning’s practice”, Pederson said in a statement. “We made a decision to limit him throughout the remainder of practice and, as a precaution, sent him for a CT scan after practice”, head coach Doug Pederson said in a statement. Newton suffered a hairline fracture in his ribs in the third game of the 2014 preseason. The Eagles will hope he can be back before the end of the preseason so he can still utilize his limited opportunities this season. This summer could be the only time of year where Wentz gets a chance to see real game action.

Wentz played from the two minute warning in the second quarter up through the mid-point of the fourth quarter.

“It was fun”, Wentz said after the game.

Wentz wasn’t exactly a picture of flawless health when he was taken with the second overall pick. Pederson planned to continue giving Wentz an equal amount of practice repetitions as starter Sam Bradford and backup Chase Daniel. That meant the four preseason games, ideally, were going to be the only opportunities for him to get into games.

The former North Dakota State quarterback took multiple heavy hits Thursday night against the Buccaneers. I haven’t done a lot of that in practice.

Philadelphia has road preseason games on Thursday at Pittsburgh and on August 27 at Indianapolis before finishing the exhibition slate on September 1 at home against the New York Jets.
