Four days after Bridgewater was lost for the season with a serious knee injury, Minnesota on Saturday traded with the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Sam Bradford. Dak is still an unproven talent; I don’t think he will be bad this season.
“With Sam Bradford; here’s what you’re getting”, Former Giants quarterback and current ESPN NFL analyst Danny Kanell said Monday on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike. He has had an injury-riddled career that has prevented him from living up to his pre-draft hype and is 25-37-1 as an National Football League starter. In his six years in the NFL, Bradford has started 16 games just twice.
Minnesota was slotted to start Shaun Hill for this season, but a move to add another veteran quarterback was expect. Mark Craig of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune writes that Shurmur played a huge role in acquiring Bradford. Bradford does, however, have the potential to be named the starter for the Vikings’ Week 2 home opener against the Packers.
The Vikings also have to be fearing that Bridgewater’s freak injury could be a career-ender.
“Because of our quarterback depth chart, we got some calls this week”. Many criticized the Vikings because of what they gave up on taking Bradford.
“We felt like it was a good opportunity for both teams”, said Roseman who stressed the importance of “win-win” moves for the benefit of future negotiations. A first and a second would be an impressive haul, and it’s not something Roseman expected to get from Spielman.
Spielman also has built a young and deep team in part because of his knack of trading back into the first round.
Another former first-rounder was dealt, but Justin Gilbert hardly has a track record in the NFL. All nine are still on the team.
Bridgewater, who dislocated his left knee and tore the anterior cruciate ligament in practice last Tuesday, will be relegated to inspirational pregame speaker for that one.
Who will be the Birds’ quarterback now is still to be determined. He has yet to have his surgery.
Another big reason the Vikings wanted Bradford was his contract; he’s signed through next season. “Teddy [Bridgewater] has to get his surgery and go through his rehab – and I think everybody knows how we feel about Teddy – but to me it was just too unique of an opportunity the caliber of player at that position like Sam Bradford…going into next year we have two very talented quarterbacks”. “We have really good veteran leadership on this team”.
Two years ago, Hill started the opener for the Rams after Bradford tore his ACL on August 23 against Cleveland. The Eagles paid his $11 million signing bonus. The Vikings sent a private jet to fly Bradford to Minneapolis, and he spent Saturday evening familiarizing himself with the team’s playbook. He is on the books for $13 million in 2017, with $4 million of it guaranteed. This isn’t just a one-year rental.
