Early ANC elective conference not a bad idea – Mantashe

Secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said “coalition governments have been established by opposition parties” which were based on “a common desire to remove the national liberation movement from power at all costs”. The league also called for expulsion of some leaders in Gauteng but Mantashe said the call was “factional and sponsored”.

He said a “factionalism approach” to the conference would not resolve anything.

But he says the ANC is not like other parties who keep the same leadership.

They go and sleep and wake up and say – we will not vote for the ANC, we will vote with the DA but they can join us as we don’t like the choice of the mayor.

Mantashe briefed the media earlier on the constitution of governments in various municipalities across the country.

The general secretary has also warned that any early conference should not be held when people are angry as that will lead to conflict.

However, he again reinforced that the party took collective responsibility for these issues.

He said they are going to go back and see if there needs to be a change in leadership, which they are not opposed to.

“As a discussion is clear of a yes to an early conference, what is the objective and how do we manage the process to get to results. It’s not a bad idea and it’s actually being discussed in various structures (sic)”.

Last week, the ANCYL said the party’s 8% decline during the local government elections showed that the ANC needs to regenerate itself by electing new leadership because the current leadership led by President Jacob Zuma has become entangled in hard issues.

But if an early elective conference happened, the ruling party needed to do with this with the aim to reconcile differences within its structures, he said.

Mantashe added that South Africans should separate facts from perceptions around corruption and President Jacob Zuma.
