Early report: Cal downs Hawaii in Australia, 51-31

Hawaii was a 20-point underdog against California in the 2016 college football opener at ANZ Stadium in Sydney, so why not take a chance?

The opening play of the 2016 college football season was just odd. Right there to recover the tricky kick-off by Hawaii was a Mission Prep alum and San Luis Obispo native – Cal running back Patrick Laird.

If you’re the type of person who would stay home on a Friday night to watch a game between a team that might not make a bowl game and a team that definitely won’t make a bowl game just because college football is BACK (and, I am that type of person), this is your open thread.

Tailback Khalfani Muhammad scored the first touchdown of the game on a 34-yard run and finished with 96 yards.

Here are the highlights of the first half of Cal vs. Hawaii.

The Golden Bears rolled up 347 first-half yards and scored 17 points over the final four minutes of the first half to take a 34-14 lead and essentially put the game away.

CALIFORNIA: Webb’s strong debut reinforced the faith coach Sonny Dykes showed in him from the outset.

While Cal’s offense looked like it picked up where it left off last season, unfortunately so did the defense. The Wolverines beat Hawaii 48-17 in 1998 in the only previous regular-season game between the teams.
