Earth Hour: Sydney Among First Cities To Switch Off Lights

In Mumbai several government and private buildings, public landmarks as well as common citizens contributed to “cooling” the Earth by switching off lights for an hour between 830PM and 930PM. From 8.30 to 9.30pm local time, the lights will remain dark for Earth Hour. But for those who want to switch off their lights for an hour, no one is stopping you.

Last year’s event, organised by the charity WWF, saw more than 700 landmarks around the world switch off their lights, including Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, France’s Eiffel Tower and more than 30 Unesco World Heritage Sites.

Elsewhere in the country, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh supported the Earth Hour campaign by switching off the lights of his official residence Oakover in Shimla.

Speaking of Jaipur’s participation in Earth Hour, Gerda Unnithan, the force behind the city’s sparrow conservation effort, said, “Unfortunately, not many people know of Earth Hour in Jaipur”.

“WWF’s Earth Hour reminds us there are simple things we can all do for the planet, not for just one hour, but every day”, said Mr Huddleston.

Australia’s iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge went dark on Saturday night, as the Earth Hour campaign to switch off lights to call for action on climate change began rolling out across the planet, organisers said. However, other cities, such as Bandung, will hold an event to commemorate the Earth Hour.

In the Philippines, Earth Hour 2016 will showcase renewable energy. From living rooms to classrooms and conference rooms, people are demanding climate action.

Meanwhile, another Earth Hour event takes place on Saturday at Trinity Church in Falkirk.

According to Earth Hour Organisers, the event “aims to encourage an interconnected global community to share the opportunities and challenges of creating a sustainable world”. Floods, droughts, energy crisis, food shortages, endemic diseases, mass migration, economic deterioration and ecosystem degradation were among major threats of climate change, Tauqeer said.

In 2011, Scotland became the first country in the world to have all its local authorities participating in Earth Hour, something that was applauded globally.
