Earthquake Hits Manipur, Leaves 6 Dead And 100 Injured
Meanwhile, ten people died and more than 100 were reported to be injured when the natural disaster measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale rocked Manipur and other north-eastern states early Monday, an official said.

Police in Dhaka said 40 people were being treated at a major hospital in the Bangladeshi capital, including one university student who jumped from a fourth-floor balcony and was in a critical condition.
Several buildings in Manipur secretariat and the landmark Ima market in Imphal developed cracks while some school structures collapsed. It struck at a depth of 10 miles below the surface and not far from the border with Myanmar.
The quake struck 55 kilometers (34 miles) below the earth’s surface. All the seven deaths in Manipur were reported from Jiribam area of Imphal West district, state officials said adding the names of the deceased were, however, not immediately available.
Imphal residents said furniture was knocked over and books fell off shelves as the ground swayed for nearly a minute.
Residents of Imphal said people fled their homes and power and telecoms lines were down in the remote region.
The pre-dawn quake killed six people in Imphal and five in neighbouring country Bangladesh, officials said.
Relief commissioners of all the states in the North-East Manipur, Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Nagaland and the State of West Bengal are being contacted on regular basis.
People ran out of their houses in panic, particularly those living in high-rise building, when they felt the jolt.
In order to assess the safety of partially damaged public buildings and in order to advise the state government on issues related to fix and retrofitting of these buildings, etc. NDMA is deploying a team of experts.
He said the state capital of Imphal was hit hard, but did not give any details. At least 70 people were injured all over the state.
India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, wrote on Twitter that he is in touch with authorities in the affected area – though some have criticised the government’s response.

There were no immediate reports of casualties on the Myanmar side of the border, a remote and sparsely populated area that suffered widespread damage this summer from landslides caused by torrential monsoon rains.
