A 4.0 magnitude natural disaster jolted residents from their sleep and briefly disrupted travel in San Francisco and Oakland Monday morning, but there have been no reports of damage from the tremor so far. Some 30,000 earthquakes occur on the planet each year that are rated between 2.5 and 5.4 magnitude.

The U.S. Geological Survey says quake was centered in the Oakland Hills, just north of Piedmont, apparently on the Hayward Fault.

The shallow quake at 6:49 a.m. was a sharp jolt, followed by a couple of gentle rolls.

BART officials said train service is recovering from 10-minute delays systemwide caused by the quake.

The BART subway system paused operations while workers inspected the tracks in the tunnel that goes under San Francisco Bay. “Was half asleep, then fully awake”. “I knocked a few books off my shelf to pretend I was there though”.
