Easter weather forecast: strong winds and heavy rain could disrupt travel plans

Gusts of 40-50mph (64-80km/h) are forecast for some inland areas, with potentially more than 60mph (96km/h) on exposed coasts and hills.

Winds could reach 70mph along the south coast, with large waves also expected and heavy rain.

The areas in rain which will be affected by the weather warning include the entirety of South Wales, Ceredigion and the majority of Powys, excluding the north of the county.

A national severe weather warning for strong winds has been issued for Monday, with the Westcountry, southern England and South Wales likely to bear the brunt.

A period of heavy, persistent rain is expected to move in tonight and into Monday morning, bringing a risk of surface water flooding, perhaps exacerbated in places by wind-blown debris.

There were reports that some ferry and Enterprise Boats services had been cancelled this morning in the St Mawes area of Cornwall due to strong winds and rough sea conditions as the miserable weather began sweeping in across the South West.

The affects of Katie will start through the early hours of the morning so if you’re partying until late Sunday night the heavy rain will arrive with a blustery SE wind.

Forecasters say some of the showers in Birmingham and the West Midlands will be heavy, with hail, thunder and gusty winds.

The Met Office has also issued yellow weather warnings for northern Scotland on Sunday.

“Met Office meteorologists will continue to monitor the progress, development and path of Storm Katie”.

It will be dry with sunny spells for most later.
