Usain Bolt from Jamaica celebrates winning the gold medal in the men’s 200-meter final during the athletics competitions of the 2016 Summer Olympics at the Olympic stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016.

American Ashton Eaton, the defending champion and world record-holder, won gold with 8,893 points while France’s Kevin Mayer took silver with 8,834 points.

Also, the USA women’s 4×100-meter relay team stayed on track for a medal, getting through on their second chance after re-running their race on their own because Allyson Felix was bumped making a handover in the preliminaries.

Eaton has now won successive Olympic and world titles to confirm his status at the best all-around athlete in the world.

“I’m exhausted right now, but I’m very happy I was able to pull it out”, Warner said. He’s the fastest man ever.

Eaton became the third person to ever defend an Olympic title in the decathlon, joining Great Britain’s Daley Thompson (1980 and 1984) and the United States’ Bob Mathias (1948 and 1952). If Eaton’s path to victory was to run fast and jump far, Warner determined his would be to run fast and throw far.

“On the straight, my body didn’t respond”.

“I am trying to be one of the greatest”, he told reporters.

Veteran Asafa Powell just wanted to make sure that the Jamaicans didn’t do anything stupid and Bolt will get the chance to run in the final on Friday. They finished second in their heat behind Japan. “There was some pressure to make it to the finals”.

Wednesday produced an “awesome hour” for the US track team, according to Tianna Bartoletta.

The unstoppable US track team might feel the same after collecting six more medals Thursday for a total of 24.

Sara Slott Petersen of Denmark took silver in 53.55sec while Muhammad’s team-mate Ashley Spencer claimed bronze in 53.72. Clement has been decorated enough, with two world championship gold medals, but the Olympic title had eluded him. With Michelle Carter taking gold in the women’s shot put the U.S.accomplished the sweep, and both attended the University of Texas.

Four years after Derek Drouin won Canada’s only track and field medal in London – a bronze in high jump – and with two days of competition to go, the team has five in Rio. “Once people see how tough it is, they get a lot more excited”.

Leading off, Bartoletta nestled into the starting blocks in lane 2 for the team’s re-run – against the clock only – after they fumbled the baton in their original qualifier.

“Our coach said before we went out there, ‘It’s just like practice, just the whole world will be watching, ‘” said English Gardner, who ran the third leg.

The night didn’t start off easy for Eaton, as the 28 year-old Portand, Oreg., native missed his first two attempts in the pole vault at 4.90 meters.

“How can’t there be one stinking point in there somewhere?” Semenya, another compelling story at these games but for different reasons to Bolt, will run in the 800 final on Saturday.

“That is why it’s my last Olympics”, Bolt said.

“I’ve always known he’d be able to set Olympic records and world records”, said Taiwo, a former Washington Husky whose college career overlapped Eaton’s.
