Wenig acknowledged the same-day delivery field had gotten crowded and increasingly competitive since eBay began its service three years ago.
The eBay Valet app will be shutting down in the coming weeks, and sellers can still get the same great service at ebay.com/valet or use the selling tools within the core eBay apps.
Now that the PayPal spin-off is complete, eBay is shutting down its same-day delivery service, called eBay Now, and three standalone mobile apps that were focused on sellers, fashion and auto sales.
“There are multiple players doing local delivery”, he said. Along with the shuttering the delivery services and mobile apps, eBay in the past few months agreed to sell its enterprise business, which helps operate other retailers’ websites, and sold back its stake in Craigslist and ended outstanding litigation with the classifieds site. The company also continues to pilot scheduled delivery in the UK and operate delivery networks in Australia, Germany and the UK that allows customers to collect purchased items in stores. It appears that service will no longer have a standalone app anymore, either.
There are questions, though, whether eBay will be able to successfully make a turnaround. The online auctioneer has some fierce competition to contend with, not just from other marketplaces like Amazon, but also from companies like Facebook, Google, and Pinterest that are considering incorporating ecommerce into their platforms. Pittman, chief product officer, said Monday in a Web posting.

Also being culled: eBay Fashion (closing this week) and eBay Motors (shutting at the end of the year.). The eBay Now app had itself already been decommissioned last year, but the service continued to be available through eBay’s main app and website. Meanwhile, eBay Fashion was No. 537 in the group and eBay Motors was No. 208.
