Ed Miliband calls for Jeremy Corbyn to resign
More than 80%, or 172 Labour MPs, reportedly backed the non-binding motion, while 40 voted against it and four abstained in a secret ballot.

Corbyn also pointed to his success in last year’s leadership contest, and said that today’s vote held “no constitutional legitimacy”. “Today’s vote by MPs has no constitutional legitimacy”.
At time of publication, more than 50 MPs have resigned from the front bench – including 20 of Mr Corbyn’s 31 shadow cabinet members, and numerous party’s most prominent figures.
It is not yet clear who would run against Corbyn as Labour leader but deputy leader Tom Watson and former shadow business secretary Angela Eagle are both being tipped as potential candidates.
“The way to resolve this is to have a leadership election”, said Dianne Abbot, newly promoted as shadow health secretary and one of Corbyn’s closest allies.
Shadow Justice Minister Andy Slaughter was the latest to leave his post, after a series of shadow cabinet departures since Sunday.
However in a statement released this evening Mr Corbyn confirmed he will not stand down as he does not want to let down all of those who voted for him last autumn.
Corbyn told grassroots supporters from the Momentum campaign group who staged a rally in his support outside Parliament yesterday to stand up for the causes they believed in.
At least 10,000 Corbyn supporters rallied in London on Monday in support of the Labour leader.
The Labour-supporting Daily Mirror joined the calls for him to quit for the sake of his party and country.
Pushed to offer names of potential leadership candidates, she said MPs now in the frame for the leadership were Tom Watson, Angela Eagle and Yvette Cooper.
“I was as elected as the Labour Party’s leader to redistribute wealth and power”, Corbyn declared in another tweet, reminding rebels, “Those wanting to change the Labour Party leadership will have to take part in a democratic election”.
Though most of his cabinet resigned after the Brexit vote, Corbyn’s allies maintain he’s still popular in the party and think he could win a challenge.

Labour’s parliamentarians fear the party has little chance of winning a general election that could happen sooner than planned if Corbyn remains at the helm, with some saying he is better suited to protest than government.
