Two California-based musicians are suing British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran for $20 million over his hit song “Photograph”, which they claim bears a similar structure to one of their songs, according to court documents filed on Wednesday. “I think @edsheeran is a genius & 100% deserves all his success”.
Plaintiffs allege that the choruses to “Amazing” and Ed’s hit single “Photograph” share “39 identical notes”.
Attorney Richard Busch has filed a lawsuit on behalf of the duo in federal court in Los Angeles. “The songs” similarities reach the very essence of the work. the similarity of words, vocal style, vocal melody, melody, and rhythm are clear indicators, among other things, that “Photograph” copies “Amazing”‘.
Photograph was another smash hit for Sheeran after the release of Thinking Out Loud.
Ed wrote the popular track with Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid and it has now received almost 210 million views on YouTube and was most recently used in the trailer for new film Me Before You.
Their lawyer said in a statement, “My clients know that they wrote the song Blurred Lines from their hearts and souls and no other source”.
The acclaimed songwriters, who have also written songs for the likes of Kylie Minogue and Emma Bunton, are seeking statutory damages and either a running royalty or injunction as a result of their lawsuit.
