Eddie Murphy Explains Why He Wouldn’t Portray Bill Cosby On ‘SNL’ Special

Saturday Night Live recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a huge special that garnered huge ratings for NBC. “There’s nothing amusing about it. If you get up there and you crack jokes about him, you’re just hurting people. I was like, ‘Hey, I’m coming back to SNL for the anniversary, I’m not turning my moment on the show into this other thing'”.

For his part, Murphy agreed that the sketch was hilarious. Had Lorne Michaels gotten his way, Murphy would have played Cosby mixing a cocktail during a “Potent Potables” video Daily Double, referencing the fact that Cosby is accused of sexually assaulting more than 50 women after drugging their drinks. Murphys impression of Bill Cosby was legendary during his stint on SNL. Eddie Murphys intended role as Bill Cosby in a Video Daily Double was taken on by current SNL cast member Kenan Thompson.

“You’re torturous him. You’re devastating his accusers”, he describes.

Right up until the night of the show, MacDonald thought there was a shot Murphy would participate in a bit that played on the famous “Potent Potables” Jeopardy! category and the Cosby rape allegations. It was the biggest thing in the news at the time.
