Game 1 of the World Series had a little bit of everything. What happened? Both the primary and backup generators powering Fox’s broadcast production trucks went out – a “rare electronics failure”, Fox said – knocking the game off the air.

But there was also a tragic loss.

Edinson Volquez, the starting pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, received the saddest news of his life right before Game 1 of World Series against New York Mets starts.

ESPN Deportes first reported just before game time the death of Volquez’s father, Daniel, at 63, which prompted much internal discussion at Fox, including input from two key members with print journalism backgrounds in analyst Tom Verducci and reporter Ken Rosenthal.

It’s not that Cespedes is a bad fielder, but with his shoulder probably still ailing after tweaking it in Game 4 of the NLCS and Gold Glove CF Juan Lagares available, it seems that Terry Collins got stuck in his ways again and made a big mistake with his lineup card.

John Knicely found Gary Green outside the gates of The K wearing a hybrid jersey – half-Mets and half-Royals.

“I don’t have any idea when he found out”, Yost told reporters, per Kevin Draper of Deadspin.

“I feel like he’s pitched great games here”, Yost said.

‘I was keeping my eye on him and he was fine.

“It was hard for me to know what I knew and see him compete the way he competed”. Later on, we learned that according to the Royals, his wife requested that the team not tell him before such an important start, and the team asked Fox not to mention it on the broadcast, since Volquez routinely goes into the clubhouse between innings, where he might hear a TV showing the game. We know how good he’s been.

Volquez’s father died earlier in the day after battling a heart disease for several years. It’s unclear when he will return to the team.

But this was not the strangest thing that happened during the epic World Series opener between the Royals and the Mets.

He acknowledged that he feel more comfortable at home, but Royals manager Ned Yost insisted that history didn’t play a role in setting up the rotation so Cueto potentially would pitch his two starts at Kauffman Stadium.

The mother of Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas died two months ago.

“Every inning tonight I was thinking about my dad, ” Young said, “hearing his choice”. Talk about the courage and the guts to go out and do that, and the focus, it’s just tremendous’.

“You know how tough that can be”, he explained. “I’m just a Johnny Cueto fan”. “And he would have to pick up the slack”.

Royals left fielder Alex Gordon said that most of Volquez’s teammates didn’t know about the death. He didn’t know. And I guess after the game was when he found out’.
