Edmund upsets Isner in 3rd round of US Open
The world No.1. Novak Djokovic has cruised into the last 8 of the US Open, following a straight sets victory over Britain’s Kyle Edmund at Billie the Jean King Tennis Center. Djokovic had played just six total games in his previous two matches because one opponent withdrew and the other retired in the first set.

Meanwhile, top seed Novak Djokovic, starved for competitive action, feasted against unseeded Briton Kyle Edmund, gobbling up a large serving of points in a 6-2 6-1 6-4 romp that put him into the quarter-finals. Tsonga continues to play his best tennis in grand slam play and has lost just one set in this tournament. I really wanted to start the match well today because I didn’t have much time on the court overall before the fourth round.
The game swung back in favour of the Yorkshireman at the start of the third set as Edmund broke Isner’s serve in the second game and went on to take the set 6-2.
This is Tsonga’s third US Open quarterfinal, but he’s never made the semifinals in this tournament.
Garbiñe Muguruza, the French Open champion, was woeful in a second-round loss to Anastasija Sevastova, while 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic was outhit by Sock in a third round triumph for the American, who is into week two here for the first time in his career.
Edmund continued his breakthrough run at Flushing Meadows on Friday by beating American 20th seed John Isner, having already knocked out world number 15 Richard Gasquet in round one.
Kerber and Kvitova were kept waiting longer than expected as Frenchman Lucas Pouille overcame Rafael Nadal in a five set epic lasting just over four hours.
“Is true that I don’t have lot of matches on my shoulders for the last three, four months, but even like this I lost an opportunity”, he said. “But considering the stage of the season, you know, the amount of matches I’ve played, what I’ve been through with my body, I think it’s actually good to have some days off then shorter matches from one side”, said Djokovic.
Although everyone noticed that Djokovic is calling his physiotherapist during his match, he noted that everything’s fine and good.
“I’m feeling very good”.
“That’s my game and that’s what I’ve been doing this tournament”. Third-seeded Stan Wawrinka, sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan, eighth-seeded Austrian Dominic Thiem and former champion Juan Martin del Potro will also battle for quarterfinal berths.
The slower conditions at night and virtually indoors on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court will suit Djokovic and he loves playing these late matches at the US Open, but so should Tsonga the showman. He added, to the fans: “You make me so happy everyday”.
Against the 58th-ranked Niculescu, who presents an unusual style with a forehand slice, Wozniacki played more aggressively than her normal defensive game.

Isner held for 5-all, but Edmund, the most relaxed of characters, was not altogether pleased that he had to successfully challenge two poor calls on the American’s serve.
