Egypt a natural bridge between Asia and Africa: PM Modi

Modi said adding that the two countries have chose to expand defence trade, training, combat capacity building, and greater information exchange to combat terrorism.

India and Egypt on Friday agreed to step up their counter-terrorism co-operation, focusing particularly on sharing of intelligence, operational exchanges and prevention of radicalisation of the youth in both the countries.

They welcomed the expansion of Indian investment in Egypt, which is now about $3 billion, and agreed that all investment related issues should be addressed in order to further boost bilateral trade and investments.

During the meeting, Kerry also welcomed the Egyptian Government’s efforts to undertake critical economic reforms supported by the International Monetary Fund.

The challenges led the Arab country to seek a 12 billion US dollars loan recently from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to implement a tough, three-year economic reform program.

“He positively assessed the role of Indian investment in Egypt which had touched $3 billion and sought greater trade and investment ties with India”, Swarup said.

Prior to his appointment as envoy to Egypt, Gorin served as director of the Foreign Ministry’s Jordan and North Africa Department.

Council chairman Vijay Sankar said though cooperation had expanded in diverse areas, there was need to reverse slowdown in the trade between the two countries.

Both sides discussed at length several bilateral and regional issues, including Syria, Libya, and Middle East peace. We also welcome Egypt’s participation at next week’s G20 Summit. “Our decision to consult more closely on regional and global issues both at the United Nations and outside will benefit our common interests”, Modi said.

In the meeting, Mr Sisi appreciated Modi’s gesture of supplying 20,000 MT of rice to Egypt at “friendship price” last month. A joint statement issued by Modi and Sisi read, “Modi welcomed Egyptian investments in India under the “Make in India” initiative, in the manufacturing and services sectors”.

Accepting the invitation by the Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, Egyptian President is arriving today.
