“Bombing against our consulate in Cairo, there are no Italian victims”, Gentiloni tweeted shortly after the attack that left one person dead.

“Italy is not intimidated”, he added.

Hundreds of soldiers and policemen have been killed in militant attacks in Egypt since the army deposed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Charred vehicle parts could be seen scattered in the street.

In February 2014, the ISIS-affiliated, Sinai-based Ansar Beit al-Maqdis (now named the State of Sinai) gave a warning to all foreign tourists to leave the country.

Hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood members, including ousted President Mohammed Morsi, have been sentenced to death by Egypt’s courts.

Over the same period, at least 1,400 people, mostly Islamists, have been killed in a security crackdown on protests.

The crackdown had initially brought worldwide pressure, especially from the European Union, on Sisi which has largely given way to support as he positions himself as a front line opponent of regional jihadists. No group has yet said it carried out the attack.

There has been no report yet of who may be behind the attack.

The cabinet has said it would reconsider that provision following a media outcry.
