Egypt’s president swears in new government

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi swore in a new government on Saturday that included 15 new ministers, a week after the previous administration resigned following a corruption scandal, state media reported. The defence, foreign and justice ministers all kept their jobs as did most economy-related ministers such as planning and supplies.

Egypt’s governments in the past have been mired with corruption allegations and has been in turmoil since the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

The 33-member Cabinet contains three women and 16 new members.

There are no politicians and one of the problems with Egyptian politics is we don’t see politicians as ministers. “Even the prime minister is not a politician”, said Sadek.

The ministries of health and population were merged as well as the ministries of technical education and education and scientific research and higher education. In 2014, the company had disputes with three mobile operators in Egypt (Etisalat, Vodafone, and Mobinil) over having a fourth license for mobile networks (unified telecommunication license).

Sisi met with now-former Prime Minister Mahlab Saturday morning, during which he gave the now-former ministers a week to function as a caretaker government. In its absence, Sisi holds legislative authority and has passed dozens of laws by decree. Most recently, in July, at least 50 soldiers were killed in a wave of coordinated attacks across several checkpoints in the restive Sinai Peninsula.
