Egyptian police general gunned down in Sinai

Egyptian military officials have said the fish farm is designed to shut down tunnels used to bring in militants and weapons.

Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has called on the Egyptian government to stop submerging the border area between the Gaza Strip and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.

The operation is aimed at ending smuggling to the Palestinian territory, security officials told DPA.

Tensions have spiked between Palestinians and Israelis recently over a Jerusalem site holy to both Jews and Muslims.

Unidentified gunmen have assassinated an Egyptian police general in the Sinai Peninsula stronghold of ISIL.

Militants affiliated with ISIL shot and killed an Egyptian Interior Ministry brigade general overnight into Sunday in the North Sinai governorate, the ministry’s press service said.

Since the 2007, the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip has been subject to a blockade imposed by Egypt and Israel, designed in part to prevent the terror group importing weaponry.

A claim of responsibility by the IS branch in Egypt, known as Sinai Province of the Islamic State, is circulating on social media accounts of supporters.

Egypt has been suffering surge of militant attacks against army and police forces since the ouster of the Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by the army in response to mass protests against his rule.

And last month, the Egyptian branch of the Islamic State group beheaded a young Croatian there who was working for a French company.
