Elena Delle Donne named MVP of WNBA

The Chicago Sky lost their regular-season finale to the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, but MVP front-runner Elena Delle Donne wrapped up the WNBA scoring title with a 28-point performance. We had so much fun this year. After hard games or a long flight, she said she often will use a computerized massage machine that aids recovery in the legs, hips and arms. The Sky then beat Indiana to advance to WNBA Finals, but once there, back issues limited Delle Donne’s effectiveness as the Sky were swept by Phoenix. Delle Donne also shot a league-high 95 percent from the free-throw line.

Delle Donne played in 31 of 34 regular-season games in 2015, leading Chicago in points (23.4 ppg), rebounds (8.4 rpg) and blocks (2.0 bpg).

Delle Donne and the Sky will be competing in the WNBA playoffs again this season, with a first round matchup against the Indiana Fever scheduled to tip-off on Thursday night at 7 p.m.

LeBron James was among those who tweeted their congratulations to Delle Donne after the news was announced on ESPN’s Sports Center. The reigning MVP had another really strong season averaging 20.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists to help Minnesota get the No. 1 seed in the West. Players were awarded 10 points for each first-place vote, seven for second, five for third, three for fourth, and one for fifth.

The first Chicago player to be MVP in the franchise’s 10-year history, Delle Donne received 38 of the 39 first-place votes and 385 points in media balloting.

A former rookie of the year, Delle Donne is having her best season since entering the WNBA in 2013 out of the University of Delaware. Mission accomplished, as Delle Donne doubled her 2014 average of 4.0 rebounds to 8.4 in 2015. That set the tone for what kind of season it was going to be for Delle Donne, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward.

“Our chemistry is by far the best it’s every been on any Sky team I’ve ever been on, and I think that’s going to be huge and carry us through”, said Delle Donne, who welcomed the addition of shooting guard Cappie Pondexter, a longtime WNBA standout, this year.
