A rescue mission has been launched to keep a determined elephant seal off a Northern California highway that it has repeatedly tried to cross, causing traffic chaos.

Earlier, CHP Officer Andrew Barclay says he got a face-full of hot breath and saliva while trying corral this extremely irritated mammal.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service crews and CHP officers managed to usher the adult seal back into the San Francisco Bay. “If she comes back out onto the road, we’re hoping to be able to put her into a carrier to take her to a different location”.
The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito is keeping an eye on the seal lion …because it might be pregnant, and trying to move again to a different location to give birth. “That’s where she grabbed the board with her very large powerful mouth”, Officer Barclay said pointing to a gouge in a board. As for why she kept trying to make her way onto Highway 37, the Marine Mammal Center believes she was trying to give birth on dry land. Concerned motorists who slowed down and later stopped to ensure the seal was ok caused a huge traffic jam for more than a mile in both directions on Highway 37, reported ABC 13 Eyewitness News. On Tuesday morning, the seal was still swimming near the highway and showed no signs she was leaving.
Using a tarp borrowed from Six Flags, about 15 people dragged her to a lift truck, which was very necessary in getting the half-ton mammal off the ground.
Experts say the seal does not appear to be injured and is likely lost and confused.
TMMC stayed with the seal until dark Monday evening and when they returned Tuesday morning, the seal was still in the water looking as though she still wants to cross the highway.

There are many, legitimate questions that can be asked about why the seal wanted to cross the road.
