Elephant seal repeatedly tries to cross California highway
A large and “very determined” elephant seal was causing traffic problems in the North Bay Monday afternoon after it tried to cross Highway 37.

The massive mammal, estimated to be anywhere between 500 to 1,300 pounds, was first reported trying to climb the divider wall of Highway 37 near Sears Point in Sonoma County around 1 p.m. on Monday, Sherr said.
After officials were able to get the elephant seal into the water, it managed to make its way back to the shore, where it ended up getting stuck in the mud.
“He’s back in the water now, ” Barclay said. At one point a number of passing motorists stopped to take pictures of the seal, further complicating traffic matters on the busy four-lane highway. “She’s very adamant she’s going to cross this stretch of roadway”. “So she’s got a lot of weight, she’s got a lot of strength on her, she could tear the board away from your hands if you don’t hold it the proper way”, Marine Mammal Center expert Barbie Halaska said.
Most of those trying to help the seal left the area Monday evening after she got back in the water and the tide got lower, decreasing her chances of reaching land.
Barclay says crews with the Sausalito-based Marine Mammal Center and the San Pablo Bay National Marine Sanctuary are also helping with the rescue.

A spokeswoman for the Marine Mammal Center said the seal looked healthy and that it was unknown if it was sick or injured.
