Elephant seal stops traffic in California
The California Highway Patrol had quite the traffic disturbance when the 500-pound seal reportedly tried to make her way over a highway divider. Officials said the CHP first got the call about the seal crawling across Highway 37 near Sears Point, in Sonoma County, at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28.

Halaska planned to get in the water in a kayak Tuesday morning and attempt to drive the seal out of the inlet she is in and back toward the larger Bay and the Golden Gate.
Crews with the Marine Mammal Centre and the San Pablo Bay National Marine Sanctuary also helped with the rescue.
‘Every time we got her in the water, she circled back and tried to climb out again, ‘ California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Andrew Barclay said.
Barclay added that the elephant seal had “a lot of weight behind her and a lot of muscle”.
Using a tarp borrowed from Six Flags, about 15 people dragged her to a lift truck, which was very necessary in getting the half-ton mammal off the ground.
ABC News reports that elephant seal had repeatedly tried crossing the highway despite being guided back to a bay multiple times. Barclay and the others coaxed her back into the estuary. “She pretty much does what she wants”, Barbie Halaska, a research assistant at the mammal centre, was quoted by the San Francisco Chronicle as saying.
Rulli said because of the possibility of pregnancy, wildlife officials are taking extra precautions with the seal and being “extra gentle”.
Tolay is on the petite side for elephant seals – cows typically way up to 2,000 pounds – but she’s still been able to establish a bit of a fan base. State Fish and Wildlife wardens responded and helped guide the animal back toward the tidal waters where she then took up a spot on a mudflat.

“Our determined elephant seal from yesterday is still determined”, Marine Mammal Centre the at Sausalito said on Twitter.
