Elephants Perform For The Last Time At Ringling Bros. US Circus
For years, the elephants performed prominently in the circus’ shows with their graceful dance routine. He experienced his first Ringling circus in 1946 in Columbus, Ohio, where he picked up a habit he couldn’t kick.

There are now two bills pending in the Rhode Island state legislature which would make it illegal to use bullhooks on elephants, which is known as common practice by animal trainers. The Humane Society has demanded an end to the breeding program of Ringling.
“Ringling is the big brand to relent on the use of elephants in traveling acts, and I think it will just be a matter of time before all of it ends”, Pacelle said.
The decision came after decades of animal rights advocates protesting the use of elephants in shows and highlighting mistreatments.
PT Barnum added the African elephant Jumbo to his circus in 1882, but Hackaliah Bailey added an elephant to his show in the early 1800s. Sunday’s show included horses, lions, tigers, dogs, pigs and other animals.
I am glad that people are becoming more aware that all circus animals are sentient beings which need our care and protection and should not be exploited and abused for commercial gain.
Ringling Brothers denies those allegations.
The final performance leaves the 11 pachyderms with one last road trip, this time to Ringling’s Center for Elephant Conservation, where they will join a herd of 29 elephants already in residence. Ringling will continue to use animals, Feld said.
“Their environment needs to stimulate them”, said Elephant Aid International founder Carol Buckley, who was part of a team that inspected the Polk City facility several years ago for a lawsuit.
