Elon Musk defends Tesla Model S after knock on its reliability

So Elon’s first tweet is correct, but it seems to gloss over the fact that Tesla scored higher the previous year, presumably with earlier builds of the Model S as part of the survey. No one even knew that was possible.

New York Times reported that a series of problems has plagued the survey and a lot of them are about the automatic door handles, noises and “motors that needed to be changed”.

Autopilot takes over driving functions such as steering and changing lane. The technology isn’t quite there yet, until Tesla somehow came with the breakthrough. The AutoPilot system has also been shown speeding and being pulled over by police. The magazine says reliability also suffers when new features are introduced.

Tesla, which unveiled its autopilot feature as part of its version 7.0 software release on October 14, said that the self-driving system utilized feedback from the camera, radar, ultrasonic, and GPS systems, making it “the only fully integrated autopilot system” to do so. Both drivers in the videos aren’t following these instructions to the letter, but by hovering their hands above the wheel, are quick enough to react to the sudden movements that they avoid any actual danger. According to the storied publication, the Model S was the best performing vehicle it had ever tested. Just like with video game developers these days, why not just let the public “test” it? What do you think of Consumer Reports reversal on the matter? Out of the 100-point scale, they gave it 103. The price of Tesla shares had climbed by the closing bell, but still ended the day down by 6.6%. The company tried its best to contain the situation to assure both its customers and investors.

“Tesla gets top rating of any company in service”, Musk added in another Twitter post. “In instances when hardware needs to be fixed, we strive to make it painless”, said the statement.

Tesla was eager to stress how satisfied its customers are, and said any issues will be quickly addressed.

The study conducted by the consumer group included a few 1,400 Tesla Model S owners. The other problems include alignment issues and malfunction wipers.

TrueDelta.com, a private, membership-based auto reliability tracking service, said its data indicate that Model S reliability has improved about 20 percent in the past year.
