World AIDS Day was observed yesterday and is held annually on the 1st December as an opportunity for people across the world to untie in the fight against HIV, to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate those who have died.

According to a statement made by the Director General, National Agency for the Control of AIDs (NACA), Prof John Idoko, Nigeria has seen a reduction in the number of those infected with the HIV virus over 4 million to 3.4 million just as the number of mothers transmitting to their children is going down.

The new HIV/AIDS cases this year have come among people ranging in age from 14 to 91 years old, and spouses had contracted the disease from having sex with their husbands or wives, Hsieh said, urging people to avoid unprotected sex. “In reality it actually affects heterosexuals, it affects women, it affects teens so it’s really important we get tested at least once in our lifetime”, said Nikki Sayer, R.N, Eastern Idaho Public Health. “And we have a counselor who comes and assists”, said Dr. Van Etta.

Now, however, there are medications available (known as antiretroviral therapy or ART) that help treat the HIV infection and prevent it from progressing to AIDS.
